Message I couldn't get the heater core to heat up no matter what I did while the car was idling for several minutes (long after the thermostat needle was half way). Every thing else worked correctly and checked out so I took a chance and drove it, finally after a few miles it got hot and has worked fine since.

There might be an air bubble trapped inside of the heater core... whether it's because the temperature control valve is stuck closed or not is for you to figure out. I would like to know after when/ what change you made did this start happening, that will help me possibly figure out what's wrong.

It could be:
you have a leak somewhere
you didn't bleed all of the air out of the system
your thermostat is stuck open
you routed the hoses in a way that prevents water from circulating through the heater core
a kinked hose

hope this helps

*disclaimer*: all that I say may be true or I may be completely wrong and I accept that.... please, it is your duty as another person on the internet to in-politely tell me how wrong I am :)
